Prairie Streets (2011 - 2019)
Street photography in the American heartland. The title is in homage to Prairie Lights Books, a fantastic independent bookshop where I worked for several years while living in Iowa City. This period, mostly, in Iowa was when my realization took place, that a camera in my hand everyday just felt right.
And, contrary to the constant emphasis on street photography from urban environments which I saw all too often, when I found the likes of William Eggleston, I felt a confirmation that street photography of the Midwestern experience had its place too. There is a blend of the New Topographics in here, just by the very nature that that aesthetic is so easily associated with the rural and suburban environments in which I grew up, and so to me they feel just as much street photography as any with an emphasis on people and scenes.
I tried to find beauty in the every day and the mundane, or at least something interesting. I mostly failed, but sometimes I struck gold.
