Iowa was once almost entirely covered in tallgrass prairie. Lewis and Clark say you could sometimes hide an entire horse mounted man amongst the grass. Today that prairie is very few and far between. But the land is now fertile farm land, wildly underpopulated compared to urban centers further East or West. As I sought to teach myself street photography from 2011 onward, almost all the examples I studied were in an urban context. Over the 7 (2011-2018) years of shooting street photography in and around Iowa I wanted to bring the approach of street photography from the urban to the suburban and rural context. This space will serve as a curatorial space for me to play with different depictions of Prairie Streets. I'm also sharing images on instagram under the hashtag: #PrairieStreets — do reach out and let me know if any especially strike you. - Jared
