For now, these images are not sequenced, and are a collection of some of my favorite photographs made while walking Palermo, thinking of my great-grandparents who met here, and were from towns just outside Palermo, Castella Mare del Gulfo and Marineo).
Despite being quintessentially American and made up of more than half-a-dozen heritages, most of which arrived in America just after 1900, I grew up thinking of myself as Italian-American. This was confirmed when around the age of 22 I received an Italian passport. How, you might wonder.
You see, my grandmother had been born in America shortly after her parents had arrived from Palermo. They had not yet been naturalized as Americans. Thus, my grandmother, being more in America, was automatically an American citizen, but, because her parents were still Italian citizens, she was also automatically an Italian citizen. It is with this passport which I arrived to the UK in September of 2018, and reside here still.
Since this trip I have also had the fortune to travel to Scotland to visit the ancestral home of my mother's paternal grandfather. (Images to be released soon.)
The heritage where I next know the most about our provenance is Hungary. Thus, a trip is needed to Hungary to continue to explore what histories fed into this quintessentially American family which I come from.
